    The holidays are coming.

During this period, you will find most offices empty as most go on year end leave. IT, however, still has to run and be maintained.

So how do IT professionals keep their IT running during the holidays?

Chua Koon Teck, technical consultant at AsiaTel, said in jest, that one should just cross fingers and pray for best.

However, jokes aside, IT professionals like Mr Ng Gim Siong, managing director of Cypress Computing noted that while the environment for IT infrastructure are unique to each corporation, there should be common basic steps in place for IT professionals to keep their IT running during the holidays.

“Before leaving for the holidays, IT professionals should do a IT health check to ensure there is no hardware error and the backup is running fine,” said Mr Ng.

“Power for unused devices should also be switched off when one goes for long holidays. This is to prevent any unnecessary power surge during a power failure.”

For Trent Payne, owner and technical lead at TrentQuailty Software, it is important to check for “free space” before leaving for the holidays.

“IT teams should ensure that disk partitions are in no risk of imminently running out of space,” shared Mr Payne.

Tan Zhi Sheng, pre-sales engineer at Originex (Singapore) Pte Ltd, suggested a network freeze before, during and immediately after the holidays.

“Management should impose a network freeze where no new devices are added before, during and immediately after the holidays,” advised Mr Tan.

“This will prevent any issues from cropping up when new devices are added.”

If you are an IT professional, do you have any tips to keep your IT running during the holidays?

  • Windows 7 Update KB 3097877 Crashes Outlook & Causes Black Screen Of Death

Infoworld is reporting that the latest update KB 3097877 for Windows 7 is crashing Outlook on some PCs and even causing black screen of death when users try to log in to a network.

    Wrote Infoworld,

The day is yet young, but I’m seeing lots and lots of reports of crashes, hangs, and odd behavior attributed to KB 3097877. As of this moment, Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged any problems in KB 3097877, and the only surefire workarounds involve uninstalling the patches or rolling back to an earlier system restore point.

I have 5 reported computers that just get a black screen after hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del, we can’t log them into the domain…. The computers that this has happened to in my domain are all Windows 7 64 bit that are configured to download and install all critical windows updates overnight. (I’ll likely be looking into setting up WSUS after this) We have about 150 computers and only 5 have been reported so far with this problem, I know for a fact that a lot of computers were just shutdown over night so they are likely downloading updates this morning automatically. This sucks….

I’m getting the same problem with Outlook 2010 32bit on Windows 7 64bit, it’s only affecting some HTML emails but as soon as you select one in the list I get the error “Microsoft Outlook has stopped working”. All these emails were working fine yesterday so the updates are to blame.

Not a great start for a simple patch to fix a OpenType security issue.

  • Appreciate The IT Manager In Charge Of Email Server Before It Is Too Late

Gizmodo recently asked their readers to submit their nightmare stories of worst IT job ever.

One that caught our eye, and IT managers can send to their management as a “lesson”, is a story of why your organisation should appreciate the Snr Systems Administrator responsible for the email server.

    Wrote LordHelmet at Gizmodo,

Company had 3 offices and decided to close my office to save money. I had been there 14 years and was the Sr. Network Administrator on a salary, not hourly. Email server was in my office, as well as several live websites and SFTP servers. They gave us 3 months notice before the closure (state law, not out of the kindness of their hearts) so everyone immediately set out to find new jobs….

… They never worried about moving the email server even though I was the only one who touched it and knew the system. So my last day comes and the VP sends out a meeting request for the following day (Saturday) with me as mandatory, subject line “Move email server”…

… They expected me to do this for free the day AFTER my last day. I told them sorry, my last day is today, I don’t work here anymore after that. He looked me straight in the eyes and said that since I don’t start my new job until Monday I technically still work there. I said sorry, can’t do it, and told them I MIGHT consider doing it at a consultant rate. They said no, so I wished them the best of luck and moved on. Three weeks later they called in a panic and agreed to pay me whatever I wanted as long as I could get the email server moved that weekend…

Don’t you think it is time to have a “Appreciate The IT Manager In-Charge Of Email Server” Day?
